W. E. Deane has come a long way since 1963 when William Edgar Deane first offered airfreight and freight forwarding from an office in Monument Street, City of London.
Today it is a highly sophisticated air, sea and road freight forwarder that prides itself on providing bespoke solutions and a personal touch to customers worldwide.
Trace its journey through the decades
William Edgar Deane founded the company in 1963, approved by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). In the early years he moved it from Monument Street to Idol Lane in the City, before opening a satellite office in Basildon, Essex. His first strategic move came in 1968 when the company took advantage of a major deregulation in the market. W. E. Deane opened its first consolidated warehouse in Barking, Essex, and moved its headquarters alongside.
While the London Heathrow office opened in 1971 a major move came the following year when Robert Falconer – the current chairman – first joined the company as M.D. With his background in sea freight, he steered the company towards its direction today as a versatile and skilled freight forwarder. The Felixstowe office opened in 1975.
(what can we say ABOUT 80s?)
Expansion picked up pace and the growing company opened a new, purpose-built, Head Office building, Mayesbrook House, that is still its HQ today.
The South African operation W. E. Deane (PTY) Ltd was formed in 1999, primarily to serve OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to the automotive industry, leading to the company developing expertise in sequencing, Just-in-Time and logistics support including pick and pack.
In the UK the company tailored services to provide finely-tuned sequencing operations for the automotive sector, opening offices in Speke (Liverpool) and Southampton. Sea freight expanded and it opened an office in the key port of Rotterdam in 2002.
In keeping with its commitment to quality, W. E. Deane Ltd was one of the first companies to attain AEO (Authorised Economic Operator) accreditation for the secure handling and storage of cargo, a vital qualification for speeding up the passage of goods.
In the same year, 2008, it opened an office in Zurich, Switzerland, to facilitate projects tailoring end-to-end logistics solutions for customers, and in 2009 it opened a new fully operational depot in the West Midlands to serve the automotive industry.
The company consolidated its position as a bespoke freight forwarder and fine-tuned its services to customers’ needs, culminating in two more offices being opened to service the automotive industry in Birmingham, West Midlands. Rob Falconer Jr, son of the current Chairman, was appointed M.D. of the group in 2019.
